Mike Kelly, B.A., Psychology and M.A. Political Science
Mike Kelly is the recently retired Director of Water Resources at TransAlta Corporation. His responsibilities included developing water strategy as an emerging issue and opportunity, identifying potential water developments, and managing other water issues related to sustainable development. Prior to taking on the water portfolio at TransAlta, Mike was their Director of Environment, Health and Safety.
He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Alberta Water Council and the Bow River Basin Council.
Mike was also the founding Executive Director of the Alberta Clean Air Strategic Alliance and later joined its Board of Directors representing industrial power generation. He spent four years in Ottawa at the National Round Table on Environment and Economy after serving on the Secretariat of the National Task Force on Environment and Economy which prepared Canada's response to the United Nations Commission on Environment and Economy (The Brundtland Commission).
Mike worked at the Environment Council of Alberta in the late 1970s and 1980s, assisting with the Neilson Commission, the Agricultural Land Use and Hazardous Waste Management Hearings, air emissions research and policy, the Alberta Conservation Strategy, and many other environmental issues facing Alberta at that time.
He began his career in fisheries management, working with northern First Nations to protect commercial and subsistence fishing, hunting, and trapping in northern Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. Through this work, Mike discovered the value of collaborative decision making and the true meaning of sustainable development.
Mike has worked on balancing the needs of the environment and the economy on issues ranging from consensus decision-making and organizational structure, to fisheries, wildlife, agricultural practices, air quality, climate change, water management, hydro power development, and international trade. He has degrees in psychology and political science from the University of Iowa, and emigrated to Canada after serving in the United States Army from 1968-1970.
